CPD FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS CPD?

CPD is an acronym for Continuing Professional Education and is divided into two categories:

Key Elements and REVS (Raising Excellence in Vehicle Sales)

KEY ELEMENTS

Key elements is an abbreviated version of the OMVIC Certification Course which is a requirement to be registered as a dealer or salesperson in Ontario. Registrants who have not taken the OMVIC Certification Course after January 1st of 2010, or who have not completed the Key Elements Course must do Key Elements as their first cycle.

Grandfathered registrants must register through Georgian College’s Automotive Business School of Canada. They will mail you the textbook, registrants have 12 weeks from the date of registration to complete the exam. This is a self-study course. You must obtain an 80% passing grade. The exam is open book, multiple choice (40) questions and registrants have one hour to complete it.

If the registrant fails the exam, they will have to register a second time with Georgian College, pay the fee and take the exam ($202.00). This is a requirement for the renewal of a grandfathered dealer or salesperson’s registration. Failure to pass the Key Elements exam will result in the registrant not being registered and therefore unable to trade in motor vehicles.

Once the registrant passes Key Elements, they proceed to the new REVS program in subsequent renewals.

UCDA members can take our supplementary Key Elements Prep Course and, if the member fails their Key Elements exam, the UCDA will reimburse the member for the cost of the rewrite.

Registrants should use the Key Elements book from Georgian College for their actual exam.

WHERE CAN I TAKE THE KEY ELEMENTS EXAM?

The Key Elements exam can be taken in person at select Service Ontario sites or online. Georgian College will email you a list of Service Ontario sites that administer the exam or you can visit https://www.omvic.ca/news/dealer-bulletins/dealer-bulletin-important-cpd-information-for-grandfathered-registrants/

If the registrant chooses the online option, Georgian College will have the details regarding online examination.

WHAT IS REVS?

RAISING EXCELLENCE IN VEHICLE SALES

This is an OMVIC branding on CPD, their in-house educational program that all non-grandfathered registrants must complete and pass with 80% for classes they are required to take. Registrants will have 90 days prior to renewal to complete and pass the exams. The cost of the course is $99.00.

REVS must be done before your registration is due for renewal. The OMVIC portal has an educational section which will open up 90 days before you are required to renew your registration and will indicate the educational requirements you need in order to do so.  It cannot be accessed before then. For registrants who are required to take REVS, they will register on the OMVIC Portal.

Registrants will be able to complete the modules that make up each course at their leisure as it is available online, 24/7. If the registrant does not finish a course or module, they can pick up where they left off. The first go-around, registrants cannot move backwards in the system to review what they have learned.

You cannot fail REVS. If you do not pass a module, you can go back and do it again until you pass. There is no additional cost for this. If a registrant has to do the course and exam again, the system will allow for back-and-forth navigation to review content.

HOW OFTEN DO I HAVE TO TAKE REVS?

The REVS program is tied to the type of registration. A dealer must renew registration annually; hence, completion of REVS is required every year.

Since a salesperson’s registration is valid for two years, the REVS requirements must be completed every two years. The educational requirements are different for Dealers and Salespeople.

Failure to take and pass the REVS exams will result in not being able to renew registration.

WHAT IS A PIC?

PERSON IN CHARGE

This is the person who is delegated to oversee the day-to-day operations of a dealership. They are responsible for oversight and compliance amongst other duties. The Dealer must notify OMVIC who the PIC is.

For dealers, this is who must take the REVS training:

  • All Persons in Charge (PIC) registered under the dealer, and
  • At least one director, officer, partner, or sole proprietor must also complete the education, unless that individual is already a PIC.

Note: For dealer classes that are subject to exemptions relating to salespersons (i.e., fleet lessors and, in certain circumstances, lease finance dealers), the education must be completed by at least one director, officer, partner, or sole proprietor.
